Some prop firms allow a VPS and others ban it. Of the eight prop firms whose official rule pages we checked on 16 October 2026, FTMO, Alpha Capital and FundedNext allow a prop firm VPS with conditions, Topstep and FundingPips ban it, and Apex Trader Funding, The5ers and E8 Markets do not address it directly.
Where a VPS is allowed, most of the fine print is about the IP address. Firms flag an address that jumps between countries or one shared with another trader. Where your firm allows it, a Forex VPS with its own IPv4 address gives your terminal one fixed address around the clock.
Key facts, checked on 2026-10-16:
- FTMO: the use of VPN/VPS is "generally allowed", except from a United States location on MetaTrader, cTrader or TradingView (FTMO FAQ, modified 24 August 2026).
- FundedNext: no VPS on accounts of $50,000 and above; below that, a private VPS with a dedicated IP is recommended and sharing it is prohibited (FundedNext, updated 8 September 2026).
- Alpha Capital: a VPN or VPS needs a static dedicated IP and an email to support first, or the account faces closure and a potential permanent ban (Alpha Capital).
- Topstep: VPS, VPNs and remote servers are prohibited by its Terms of Use (Topstep, 17 September 2026).
- FundingPips: no VPN or VPS while you access your trading account, and IP activity is logged (FundingPips).
- The5ers: several devices or IPs from your usual location are fine, but not trades from two IPs at the same moment (The5ers IP FAQ, Japanese edition, modified 15 September 2026).
- Apex Trader Funding: sharing MAC addresses, computers or IPs with other traders is strictly forbidden, and so is automation (Apex).
Which prop firms allow a VPS? Rules for 8 firms
Every cell comes from the firm's own help centre or FAQ, checked on 16 October 2026. Where the page is silent, the table says so instead of filling the gap from forums. Rules differ between account types inside one firm, so open the linked page for your exact programme.
| Firm | VPS on the trading account | IP and device rules | Official page |
|---|---|---|---|
| FTMO | Generally allowed. Never use a US location for MetaTrader, cTrader or TradingView. | No IP rule on the FAQ pages we read. Travel is generally allowed. | Travel, VPN and VPS FAQ |
| FundedNext | Only below $50,000, for a fee, with a trade-taking EA. Not for manual trading. No broker-sponsored MetaTrader VPS. | Personal devices only, never shared. No shared VPS. No IPs from restricted countries. | VPN or VPS, device policy |
| The5ers | Not mentioned on the pages we read. | Several devices or IPs are fine from your usual location. No trades from two IPs at the same moment. | IP and device FAQ (Japanese edition) |
| Topstep | Prohibited. A private server may store data and run research, but never send orders. | All trading from your personal device. No VPNs, proxies, TOR or location masking. | API Access, Prohibited Conduct |
| Apex Trader Funding | No general ban found. VPNs, proxies and cloud servers are banned when used to disguise identity, device or location. | No sharing MAC addresses, computers or IPs with other traders. | Prohibited Activities |
| FundingPips | Not permitted while you access the trading account. | IP region must stay the same from purchase to Master Account. Several devices fine within one city. | Trading Conduct and Security |
| Alpha Capital | Allowed with a static dedicated IP, after you email support naming the accounts. | No two users on one IP. No IP masking. IPs from two distant countries on one day, without notice or a VPS, count as a violation. | IP rule, VPN and VPS |
| E8 Markets | Not mentioned on the page we read. | Not mentioned. Each account must be traded independently. | Trading Policies |
Some summaries online say FTMO bans VPNs. FTMO's own FAQ says the opposite, and its one exception is a US location. None of our servers are in the United States.
Do you need a VPS for a prop firm account?
A prop firm VPS is a Windows server in a data centre that runs your MetaTrader terminal for a challenge or funded account, so it keeps working while your own PC is off. That is the real benefit: an Expert Advisor keeps managing trades, and the terminal sits on a short network path to your broker's trade server.
A VPS does not make a strategy profitable or help anyone pass a challenge. If you only trade by hand while you sit at your desk, you may not need one. At FundedNext, manual trading from a VPS is against the rules anyway.
A VPN is a different thing. It only changes the address your traffic appears to come from, often to an exit address that many users share. A VPS is a whole computer with its own fixed address.
Are EAs and copy trading allowed at prop firms?
A VPS mostly earns its keep by running an Expert Advisor (EA), a program inside MetaTrader that opens and manages trades by itself, so the EA rule matters as much as the VPS rule. Copy trading means a tool that repeats trades from one account on another.
| Firm | EAs and bots | Copy trading | News trading |
|---|---|---|---|
| FTMO | Allowed, including algorithmic trading. Limit of 200 orders at a time and 2,000 positions a day (FAQ). | Identical trading across accounts, including copy services, counts toward $400,000 per trader or strategy (FAQ). | Free in Challenge, Verification and Swing. Standard FTMO Accounts: no execution 2 minutes either side of selected news (FAQ). |
| FundedNext | Below $50,000 on MT4 and MT5, for a fee. From $50,000, fully manual. Not on cTrader or Match-Trader (article). | A VPS for account management or group trading is strictly prohibited. | Free in the Challenge. Stellar funded accounts: 40% of profit counts within 5 minutes of high-impact news (article). |
| The5ers | Any EA whose source code you own. No tick scalping, arbitrage, HFT or emulators (FAQ). | Own accounts allowed (FAQ). With other traders prohibited. | Pending orders bracketing high-impact news are prohibited (list). |
| Topstep | Own bots through the TopstepX API, simulated accounts only. No HFT. | No account sharing, group trading or opposite positions across accounts. | Restricted for a short period during Tier 1 news (article). |
| Apex Trader Funding | No automation or algorithm usage. | Trade copying with other traders forbidden. | Normal strategy allowed. Orders on both sides to gamble on the outcome are not. |
| FundingPips | Third-party EAs only as trade or risk manager. Your own EA may fully automate, with proof of ownership. | Own accounts allowed. Inbound signals or copiers prohibited. | Master Account: profits within 5 minutes of restricted news may be deducted. Zero: no trading in the window (article). |
| Alpha Capital | MT5 only, trade management only. EAs trading without human oversight prohibited (article). | Same EA with identical trades across traders breaches No Group Trading. | Free in evaluation. After passing, no opening or closing 5 minutes either side of listed releases on most plans (article). |
| E8 Markets | Any EA, unless several users run the same trades. | Own accounts allowed. No cooperation with other traders. | Not covered on the page we read. |
Read the two tables together. Alpha Capital allows a VPS, but its EAs may only manage trades, so there a server mainly keeps your trade manager alive while your PC is off. FTMO is the most open of the eight for an EA on a server.
Which prop firms ban a VPS?
Three rule pages leave no room for a server on the trading account:
- Topstep: all trading must come from your personal device. Your own server may watch and record, but never send orders.
- FundingPips: switch any VPN or VPS off before you log in. If your IP region changes in an unrealistic way, it may ask for a boarding pass or a live video.
- FundedNext from $50,000: these accounts must trade from your own device. On smaller accounts, a VPS used for manual trading, or running an EA that takes no trades, also breaks its policy.
For these three, the honest advice is not to rent a server for that account at all. Apex sits in between: no general VPS ban, but with automation forbidden a server has little to do there.
The prop firm IP address rule, and why a dedicated IP matters
The prop firm IP address rule is the set of checks a firm runs on the IP addresses that log in to your account, to confirm the account holder is the one trading. An IP address is the number that identifies a connection on the internet, and from it the firm can see roughly which country you are in. We tested IP location lookups in our geocoding API guide.
Two words decide whether your logins look normal:
- A dedicated IP belongs to your server alone. A typical VPN sends many users out through one exit address, which to a prop firm looks like several people trading from one IP. Alpha Capital forbids exactly that.
- A stable IP stays the same from day to day. Home and mobile connections often change address, and a VPN can drop you into another country after a reconnect.
The catch: your PC and the server show two addresses
If the terminal runs on a server in Amsterdam while you open the firm's dashboard from home in Germany, the firm sees two addresses in two countries. Alpha Capital handles this with its notice rule; FundingPips with its ban.
The5ers allows several IPs from your usual location but forbids placing or closing trades from two IPs at the same moment. An EA trading on the VPS while you tap trades on your phone could put both addresses in the log at once, so pick one place to trade from.
Every RS Computers plan includes its own IPv4 address plus IPv6, not shared with other customers. That covers the static dedicated IP Alpha Capital asks for and the dedicated IP FundedNext recommends, and it is what separates a Forex VPS with a fixed address from a shared VPN exit. It cannot make a banned setup legal at Topstep or FundingPips. For the speed side, see our guide on measuring MT5 latency to your broker from Amsterdam.
Can you run several prop firm accounts on one VPS?
Your own accounts, usually yes. Other people's accounts, no: that is the fastest way to lose a funded account on a VPS.
Apex forbids sharing computers or IPs with other traders and closes accounts for it. FundedNext prohibits sharing a VPS connection or a device. Alpha Capital forbids two or more users trading through one IP, and even relatives in one household must tell support before trading from a shared home connection.
That rules out three common setups:
- a friend's "trading server" with two account holders on one IP;
- a paid account manager logging in to your account, which FundingPips and Topstep prohibit;
- a signal seller hosting the same EA for many buyers, which Alpha Capital, E8 and The5ers treat as group trading.
FundingPips, The5ers and E8 allow copying between accounts of the same person. FTMO only steps in when identical trading across accounts passes $400,000 per trader or strategy. One server, one owner, one login matches every rule page above.
How to move a prop account onto a VPS without breaking the rules
- Open your firm's page from the tables and find your exact account type. At FundedNext the answer flips at $50,000.
- If the page says nothing about a VPS, as with The5ers, E8 Markets and Apex, ask support in writing and keep the reply.
- With Alpha Capital, email support the server's IPv4 address and your account numbers before the first login from the server.
- For FTMO, make sure neither the server nor a VPN shows a US location.
- Keep the Remote Desktop password to yourself, and lock RDP down as shown in our guide on how to secure RDP on Windows Server.
- Check now and then who is logged in, and from where, with two commands built into Windows.
# as Administrator, in PowerShell on the Windows VPS: who is logged in right now
query user
The output starts with the header USERNAME SESSIONNAME ID STATE IDLE TIME LOGON TIME and then one line per session. On a server only you use, there should be one name: yours.
# as Administrator, in PowerShell on the Windows VPS: last 10 Remote Desktop logins and their source IP
Get-WinEvent -FilterHashtable @{LogName='Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-RemoteConnectionManager/Operational'; Id=1149} -MaxEvents 10 |
Select-Object TimeCreated, @{n='User';e={$_.Properties[0].Value}}, @{n='FromIP';e={$_.Properties[2].Value}}
Event 1149 is written when a Remote Desktop user authenticates, so each row shows the time, the user and the address the connection came from. We ran both commands only on a Windows 10 test PC with no Remote Desktop logins, where the second one answered "No events were found that match the specified selection criteria". The user and address columns follow the event's own fields (user first, source address third); we have not yet seen them filled in by real logins on Windows Server. If an address shows up that you do not recognise, change the password the same day.
Which plan and city for a prop firm VPS
Windows is available on VPS Mini and every VDS plan, chosen at the configure step. VPS Nano and Micro are Linux only, so they do not fit MetaTrader on Windows. VPS plans have shared vCPUs. VDS plans have dedicated vCPUs, reserved for your server alone.
| Your situation | What we would pick | City | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| FTMO, one or two MT5 terminals with an EA | VPS Mini: 4 shared vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 80 GB NVMe, 1 Gb/s | Amsterdam | Allowed by FTMO, not a US location; 6.6 ms from Frankfurt, 6.7 ms from London |
| Several prop accounts of your own, with a copier | VDS Small: 4 dedicated vCPU, 8 GB RAM, 240 GB NVMe, 10 Gb/s | Amsterdam | Room for several terminals; own-account copying allowed at The5ers, E8, FundingPips and within FTMO's cap |
| Alpha Capital on MT5 with a trade manager | VPS Mini: 4 shared vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 80 GB NVMe, 1 Gb/s, or VDS Small for more terminals | Amsterdam | Static dedicated IPv4 included; email it to support first |
| FundedNext below $50,000 with a trade-taking EA | VPS Mini: 4 shared vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 80 GB NVMe, 1 Gb/s | Amsterdam | A private server with a dedicated IP, as FundedNext recommends |
| Broker trade server near Vienna | VPS Mini or VDS Small | Prishtina | 18.6 ms from Vienna |
| Many terminals plus the strategy tester | VDS Medium: 8 dedicated vCPU, 16 GB RAM, 480 GB NVMe, 10 Gb/s | Amsterdam | Room for terminals and testing side by side |
| Topstep, FundingPips, or FundedNext at $50,000 and above | No VPS for that account | None | The firm's rules forbid it |
The latency figures are our own ping.pe measurements from 6 October 2026: the lowest of about 10 pings from public probes in each city to our servers, not to any named broker. The same test gave 72.4 ms from New York to Amsterdam, so for a broker with its trade server in New York, a server in the United States would be closer than ours. That option is closed at FTMO, which rules out a US location.
Availability by city is on the plans page, and you can upgrade later from the client area with a short reboot. Our guide to VPS vs VDS vs dedicated servers explains the two plan families. For a bot of your own outside prop firm rules, see running trading and alert bots on a VDS with Claude Code; for a plain Windows server for other work, see Windows VPS. Prediction market bots have their own guide: Polymarket bot latency from Amsterdam.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a VPS for a prop firm challenge?
It depends on the firm. On 16 October 2026, FTMO said VPN and VPS use is generally allowed, Alpha Capital allowed it with a static dedicated IP and prior notice, and FundedNext allowed it only below $50,000 with a trade-taking EA. Topstep and FundingPips prohibited it. Check the official page for your account type first.
Does FTMO allow a VPS?
Yes. FTMO's FAQ, modified on 24 August 2026, says the use of VPN/VPS is generally allowed. The exception is the United States: do not log in to MetaTrader, cTrader or TradingView from a US location or through a VPS or VPN set to one. EAs and algorithmic trading are allowed.
Can I use a VPN with a prop firm?
Only where the firm allows it. FTMO's FAQ says VPN and VPS use is generally allowed, but never with a US location, and Alpha Capital requires a static dedicated IP and an email to support first. Topstep and FundingPips prohibit VPNs, and Apex bans VPNs and proxies used to disguise your identity, device or location.
What is the prop firm IP address rule?
It is the set of checks a prop firm runs on the IP addresses that log in to your account. Typical rules: no IPs from restricted countries, no two users on one IP, no sudden jumps between distant countries, and no trading from two IPs at once. FundingPips, for example, logs IP activity to verify that the account holder is the one trading.
Do I need a dedicated IP for a prop firm VPS?
Alpha Capital requires a static dedicated IP for any VPN or VPS, and FundedNext recommends a private VPS with a dedicated IP. Elsewhere, a shared IP still makes your logins look like several traders on one address, the pattern firms look for. A dedicated IPv4 avoids that.
Will a VPS help me pass a prop firm challenge?
No. A VPS keeps MetaTrader and your EAs running when your computer is off and can shorten the path to your broker's trade server. It does not change your results, and at firms that ban it, such as Topstep and FundingPips, it puts the account at risk.
Read the rule page, then pick the server
The order matters. Confirm that your firm allows a VPS for your account type and whether it wants to hear about it, as Alpha Capital does. Then use one server, for one person, with one fixed address.
If your firm says yes, our Forex VPS runs Windows on VPS Mini and every VDS plan in Amsterdam, Dublin and Prishtina, each with its own IPv4 and IPv6 and a 99% monthly uptime SLA. Want us to look at a rule page with you before you order? Message us on Telegram.
