Most businesses in Kosovo still host their websites and applications in Germany, the Netherlands or the United States — often simply because that is where the big providers are. But when your customers, staff and data are here, hosting abroad means traffic that leaves the country and comes back, content rules written for another market, and support in another time zone. A VPS (virtual private server) in Kosovo changes that. Here are seven reasons to consider it — and when it is not the right choice.
What is a VPS?
A VPS is your own virtual server: a slice of a physical machine with its own allocated virtual CPU cores (vCPU), RAM and storage, its own operating system and full root or administrator access. Unlike shared hosting, your server is isolated from other customers, nobody else can see your files, and you can install whatever your project needs — a website, an online shop, an ERP or accounting system, a mail server, a VPN or a game server.
1. Local peering: traffic takes the short path
When a visitor in Prishtina opens a website hosted in Frankfurt, their request leaves Kosovo, crosses several international networks, reaches the server and travels all the way back. Every hop adds delay and another place where congestion or an outage can slow things down.
When the server is in Kosovo and the hosting network exchanges traffic directly with local and regional networks — known as peering — that same request can stay inside the country or the region. The result:
- Lower latency — pages, logins, APIs and remote desktops respond faster for users in Kosovo and the Balkans
- More stable connections — fewer networks in between means fewer places for congestion and packet loss
- Less dependence on international links — local traffic keeps flowing even when connections out of the region are slow or disrupted
The difference is most noticeable for things that make many small requests: online shops, admin dashboards, booking systems, VoIP, remote desktops and game servers. Our network uses multiple carriers, so traffic always has more than one way in and out.
2. Freedom of expression under Kosovo law
Kosovo's Constitution guarantees freedom of expression and freedom of the media. When your server is hosted in Kosovo with a Kosovo company, the rules that apply to your content are Kosovo's laws and our published Acceptable Use Policy — not the changing content policies of a foreign platform, or requests that have no legal basis here.
That matters for journalists, local media, NGOs, bloggers, political and civic organisations, and anyone publishing opinions that a large international platform might find inconvenient. We act on valid orders from Kosovo courts and authorities, on clearly illegal content, and on copyright notices under our DMCA policy — and we do not remove lawful content simply because someone dislikes it.
3. Run your own VPN with a Kosovo IP address
A VPS is an ideal home for your own private VPN using WireGuard or OpenVPN. Unlike a commercial VPN service, the server, the logs and the keys are yours alone. Common uses:
- Secure remote access for staff working from home or travelling, into office systems and internal tools
- Connecting branch offices through an encrypted site-to-site tunnel
- Safe browsing on public Wi-Fi in hotels, airports and cafés
- A stable Kosovo IP address for reaching local banking, government and business services while abroad
Every VPS includes a dedicated public IPv4 address, so your VPN has its own address that is not shared with anyone else. Personal and business VPNs are welcome on our network; Tor relays are not permitted under our Acceptable Use Policy.
4. Your data stays in Kosovo
Many organisations handle personal data — customer records, patient files, payroll, student information. Kosovo's Law on the Protection of Personal Data (Law No. 06/L-082) follows the same principles as the EU's GDPR, and keeping that data on servers inside the country makes it simpler to know where it is, who can access it and which rules apply. For public institutions, banks, clinics, schools and companies working on government contracts, local hosting is often the easiest way to meet data-residency expectations.
Requirements differ by sector, so confirm the details for your organisation with your legal or compliance advisor.
5. Support from people in your time zone
When something breaks at 10:00 on a Tuesday, you want to talk to someone who is awake and understands your setup — not open a ticket and wait for another continent to start its day. Our team is based in Prishtina, our network operations centre monitors the infrastructure 24/7 for emergencies, and the fastest way to reach us is on Telegram.
6. Built-in redundancy with North Macedonia
Local does not have to mean a single point of failure. We run a second data centre in Skopje, North Macedonia, so you can place a backup or replica of your server in another country while keeping it in the same region. Run production in Prishtina and a standby in Skopje, or split your users between the two — with the same plans and the same support.
7. Your own isolated server
Every RS Computers VPS is a KVM virtual machine with:
- Allocated vCPU cores and RAM for your server
- Fast NVMe storage
- A dedicated public IPv4 address, not shared or behind NAT
- 10 Gbps network connectivity
- Linux or Windows Server
- 99.9% uptime SLA
Who benefits most from a VPS in Kosovo?
- Online shops and service businesses whose customers are in Kosovo and the Balkans
- Media, NGOs and independent publishers who want their content governed by Kosovo law
- Companies with remote staff or several offices who need their own secure VPN
- Public institutions, clinics, schools and banks that need to keep personal data in the country
- Developers and agencies building for local clients, and game servers for players in the region
When a Kosovo VPS is not the right fit
If most of your visitors are in North America or Asia, a server in Prishtina is not the closest option for them. In that case, host closer to your audience, or combine a Kosovo server for local users with a CDN for global traffic. We are happy to advise honestly — just ask.
Frequently asked questions
Is a VPS better than shared hosting?
For anything beyond a small brochure website, yes. A VPS gives you your own allocated resources, full control over the software you install and isolation from other customers.
Can I run a VPN on my VPS?
Yes. WireGuard and OpenVPN both run well on a VPS, and your dedicated IPv4 address gives the VPN its own Kosovo IP. Running Tor relays is not allowed under our Acceptable Use Policy.
Can I move my existing website or server to Kosovo?
Yes. We help customers migrate from other providers, cPanel hosting and VMware environments. Contact us and tell us what you are running today.
Conclusion
If your customers, your team and your data are in Kosovo, your server should be too. A local VPS gives you shorter network paths through local peering, content governed by Kosovo law, your own private VPN, data that stays in the country and support in your own time zone — with a second location in North Macedonia when you need redundancy. See our VPS plans or message us on Telegram and we will help you choose the right one.
